On Saturday, September 6th, Fetish Falls in Tempe had a Party and I was there. Sometimes it is easy to forget that Arizona has this kind of scene.

Mask at Fetish Falls

From their site:

Fetish Falls is the alternative to the mainstream alternative for all your hair and costume accessories. We specialize in these embellishments to complete your Gothic, Lolita, Punk, Rave, Anime, Cosplay, and Sexy unique look.
History
Krista Manson, owner of Fetish Falls, is a gifted creative soul and raw talent entrepreneur, wears her hair long, dark, with a shocking pink color on her bangs to express her artistic spirit. She exudes a non-assuming nature with a fastidious work ethic. She started Fetish Falls after seeing the stretchy, light weight ribbon, called crin, at a craft show. Krista spent countless hours over the course of months researching crin ribbon, sourcing suppliers and convincing her long-time boyfriend to invest money into this venture.

In early 2006, Fetish Falls was born as small craft company selling crin hair accessories at alternative lifestyle events like Fetish Ball and Phoenix Comicon. Krista quickly saw the need to expand her business to be accessible beyond the shows she would vend. Fetish Falls launched their web site in late 2006 that has grown into a very successful Internet business. Gradually, Krista expanded the Fetish Falls product mix to include goggles, steel rings, wigs, blinky and glow items, leather goods like bracelets, hosiery, sunglasses, gloves, Demonia bags, and a variety of special order costumes, clothing and Pleaser shoes.

It was a long, busy day, but fun. Moniker & DJ Headspace/Joseph Collier were giving the music. They work raves & clubs and are working into production.

DJ Headspace & Moniker

There were fashion shows featuring Cherry Frequency & other brands:

Also present were some of the Dysfunctional Dolls modeling the hair falls that are Fetish Falls Trademark.

Dysfunctional Doll at Fetish Falls

The main reason I showed up, however, was to see Sin Aesthesia perform. They did several blocks throughout the day, and we had as much fun as the night before.

Sin Aesthesia Can Can Finale

I participated as well. Never tell staff you want to be tied up:

Trying on a corset at Fetish Falls - Photo (c) Chris Seggerman

Maybe that is why it took me so long to write this up! Go by the store and tell the ladies hi. I am going back soon for a hair fall to match the new corset I ordered.

Google is leaving the valley and taking with it the unfulfilled promise of high paying jobs. They opened their office in Tempe in 2006 and have since employed approximately 50 people as opposed to the originally projected 600. One of Google’s Senior V.P.’s , Alan Eustace, announced their departure via blog on Sept. 19th citing internal issues. Their official date of closure is Nov. 21st, 2008.

The Arizona economy is not in good shape mainly due to its reliance on housing and tourism – neither of which is generating much revenue these days. Phoenix Business Journal reported on Thursday that the city’s unemployment rate jumped half a percentage point in August from 5.1 to 5.6 percent. This demonstrates a frightening trend considering that the unemployment rate in July was reported at 4.6 percent. Loss of jobs has been reported in retail, construction, and trade-related fields in the month August.

A single explosion indicates a field goal and two explosions, 30-60 seconds apart means a touchdown and successful point after. I guess the lone explosion could be a touchdown and missed extra point – yes, this can get confusing. Anyway, these bombs are loud and easily heard from anywhere on campus, inside or out. I spent several years’ worth of Saturdays in the art warehouse (fiber studio) and followed the game score by explosions.

Of course, it is a one-sided scorekeeping system – not even the tiniest firecracker is lit when the other team scores. It is possible, however, to hear a noise swell from the stadium and if the opponent’s fans are abundant and particularly vocal, there’s another dimension to the audio score system. A noise swell without aerial bombs can either indicate a score by the opponents or a near-miss by the Devils. Despite the loopholes, inaccuracies and vagueness of this scoring system, it puts you in the game, even if you’re outside the stadium. And then, what a surprise when you find out the real score . . . 14-14 at halftime?

From the exhibit web page:

“[Phoenix] has a growing cultural infrastructure with artists living and working throughout the city. The downtown art scene draws thousands of visitors each month in addition to weekly art walks at the Scottsdale galleries, and contemporary art exhibitions open regularly at non-profit spaces across the Valley. Artists are playing an active role in envisioning the city’s future, developing clusters of studios, co-ops and galleries and revitalizing neighborhoods in the process. New American City: Artists Look Forward is an exhibition and dialogue on contemporary art and artists, and their role in the future of our city.

The website includes images, a schedule of free public lectures and programs, bios on the 23 artists selected and more. The opening reception is Friday, September 8 from 7-10pm and it is FREE to the public, which is always the case at the ASU Art Museum (no admission cost everyday). There will also be a FREE concert that evening with the local bands Sweet Bleeders and Snow Songs. The exhibition space will also have a resource lounge that will include a large selection on the Phoenix areas growth and development, as well as fiction books by local writers.”

Contact information as well as hours of operation are available on the New American City: Artists Look Forward web page.
