Sacks Sandwiches, out of this world! It’s on University and Hardy in the same plaza as Sabuddy and Cafe Lalibela, and if you’ve never been there I urge you to stop in and get yourself a Tom (yours truly) original. Turkey on marble rye, toasted, havarti cheese, easy mayonnaise, lots of lettuce, and cranberry sauce. Yes, cranberry sauce. Oh so yummy. They have quite a few original sandwiches and a large menu of options if you’d like to make your own “self portrait” as they call it. They have at least 4 flavors of iced tea in constant rotation, including a hawaiian red tea that is delicious (have only seen this @ the Phoenix location). To top it off, every sandwich order comes with a yummy chocolate chip cookie that’s made from their own cookie dough that you can also purchase. It’s a nice finishing touch.

I went in at the 24th Street entrance as it was just after work and I work on 24th Street. I have never used this entrance before. My girlfriend’s flight had been delayed twice already so who knew when it was going to arrive. I was a bit dismayed at the prospect of wasting a half an hour circling the terminal so I was quite excited to find the staging lot. I never knew that Sky Harbor had a staging lot and flight information board! Is there an east side staging lot like the one on the west side? It was extremely convenient. I was able to sit and enjoy (as much I could have hoped for) my meal (if you want to call it that) from Carl’s Jr. The flight information board shows all incoming flights and displays “Ready for Pickup” when the bags are available in baggage claim. Off I went as her flight displayed “Ready for Pickup” and I waited perhaps 3 minutes curbside before my girlfriend emerged. I’ll have to utilize this staging lot more often.

This is fine. What is not, is that ADOT has allowed them use of the 202 freeway which they will shut down in Mesa between Higley and Power for three extended weekends starting the 27th (from Thursday night thru early Monday)! Not only is this annoying as we’ve had MANY weekends of shutdowns for the laying of rubberized asphalt, but get this, ADOT is not receiving any money for this. The studio has, however, agreed to reimburse for all signage and ancillary costs ADOT may incur due to the closures. Give me a break! Hey Hollywood, how about a reimbursement for Arizona drivers inconvenienced by this! I think I’ll boycott the movie. Read the AZCentral article here.

I just spent 5 days in and around the the fellow Metblog city of Denver. What an awesome place! I have my opinions on light rail and what it won’t do for Phoenix (which I won’t share right now) but one thing that Downtown Phoenix REALLY needs is something comparable to Denver’s 16th Street Mall. A car free pedestrian friendly strip several miles long served by free hybrid shuttle busses. Combine this with free wi-fi along the entire stretch, and in my opinion you’ve got a recipe for revitalization. Another problem is that’s is so cheap to park in Downtown Phoenix that there’s no desire for a real mass transit system or any incentive to use existing mass transit. It’s been discussed over and over, with a myriad of solutions proposed, and it’s no secret that Downtown Phoenix needs help. What I wonder is how much research Phoenix has done in other cities to see what works and what doesn’t, and why has Phoenix had such a hard time with revitalization. Whatever it is, it’s not for lack of monetary investment. Public projects such as ASU’s campus expansion, light rail, and Phoenix Convention Center’s expansion are said to total $1 billion, but these don’t address public facing issues like blight, massive expanses of concrete and parking structures, lack of affordable and desirable housing and more importantly a lack of green, public friendly gathering places and shade in the downtown area. Phoenix really needs to begin investing in smaller street level projects that make the downtown area friendly for pedestrians (not cars and corporations). Get with the schtick Phoenix!, with Southwest flying to Denver for not much more than $100 round trip, I’ll skip out for now and chill in Downtown Denver.
