But as a resident of downtown Phoenix, I just hope one opens closer to me someday soon… By the way, I was browsing around their website and noticed they have their famed “secret menu” posted on the site. Here’s a link.

Phoenix has some of the best sunsets in the world. And I’m not one to take them for granted - whenever possible, I try to spend a few minutes outside at sunset enjoying the show in the sky. I sometimes also like to plan an evening out with friends around the time of sunset in order to be at locations that have an ideal view. One of my favorite places to sunset watch is at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain. The outdoor patio at the restaurant is great if you’re dining there. But if you just want to grab a cocktail, the outdoor patio at Jade Bar also has a fantastic view of Paradise Valley. This is one of my favorite places to go year round, but particularly this time of year when the temperature is ideal. And when the temperature drops after sunset, they warm the patio with a cozy fire that makes for an enjoyable evening under the stars.

The temperature is perfect and the sky is sunny which means it is event season in the Valley! The FBR Open starts next week at the TPC in North Scottsdale (NoSco).

Regardless of whether or not you golf (I don’t), this is a fun event to attend. There are a few ways you can experience it. One of my favorite things to do is play hookie from work and catch a day session when the crowds aren’t as big. Or you can join thousands of people at the 18th hole on Sunday for the grand finale. Or you can hit the Bird’s Nest for live music.

But my all time favorite is the infamous 16th Hole where golf ettiquete doesn’t exist. The hole is surrounded by corporate tents full of people partying loudly. Last time I went, I had so many cocktails by 3 PM that I don’t really remember much about the golf, but it is one of the best times I’ve ever had at a golf tournament! Unfortunately the party isn’t easy to access though…unless you have several grand to toss around or have a friend whose company is sponsoring a tent and has a ticket to spare. I’m out of luck this year myself…unless there is someone out there who wants to take pity on me! ;).

Regardless of how you go, everyone should experience this Phoenix classic at least once in their lifetime. Click here for ticket info.

Weekend freeway construction drives me nuts. Literally. There is nothing worse than zipping around town running errands on the one day of the week you have free, or driving to meet friends for dinner, and then all of a sudden BAM! - you’re sitting traffic for 30 minutes. I realize there really isn’t a good time for road construction, other than maybe between 1 am and 5 am. And I’m not holding my breath for that to become standard operating procedure anytime soon. So in the meantime, I just discovered two resources for planning around delays. The first map shows where there are current road closures and restrictions. The second map shows how fast traffic is moving on major roadways. Happy Motoring.

The annual Barrett-Jackson car auction, held at WestWorld in Scottsdale, opens to the public tomorrow and runs through next weekend. If you are a classic car buff (like my dad) or related to a classic car buff (like me) or just generally interested in watching as cars are auctioned off for hundreds of thousands of dollars, then this is the event for you. Last year the highest bid for a car was over $3 million. The last two days of the auction are when things get really crazy and they bring out the big ticket items, but it’s also the most crowded on those days and it can be hard to get a seat - or even a place to stand - in the auction room. The event is also covered on the Speed Channel if you want to watch from the comfort of home. And if your goal is to avoid this event and the traffic, then you might want to avoid Loop 101 between Raintree and Hayden next weekend. Here’s a link to a map that shows the area affected by this event.

I had some colleagues in town over the last few days for a team retreat. Instead of meeting at a hotel, we decided to have our meeting in one of the classrooms at the Desert Botanical Gardens. If you ever need a place to hold a meeting or some sort of event, I would highly recommend DBG. The classroom setting was comfortable and worked well for our purposes. There was a little patio off to the side of the classroom where we could have lunch outdoors. And during our lunch break, we arranged for a guy named “Cactus Jack” to take us on a 30 minute tour of the gardens which was especially great for the out-of-towners. The staff at DBG was very friendly and easy to work with. I highly recommend the meeting facilities at DBG for anything from team retreats to receptions to reunions.

Since a nice breeze swept through the Valley today and cleared the air a bit, and it was such a beautiful sunny day with just the right temperature for going on a hike in the middle of the day, I decided to go on one of my favorite urban hikes.

I like doing the occasional hike up Squaw Peak or Camelback, but there are lots of lesser known hikes around the Phoenix Mountain Preserve that offer equally impressive city views and a good workout without the crowds. One that I like doing when I’ve only got 40 minutes and don’t want to scramble over rocks is to take a walk on 36th Street north of Lincoln Drive. I park at the Palo Christi Presbyterian Church at the corner of 36th Street and Lincoln, cross over Lincoln, and walk north on 36th Street. It winds up through a neighborhood with some incredible homes and then goes into the Preserve. The road is pretty steep most of the way and gets your blood pumping. But the view of the city once you’re at the top is very impressive. The walk is about 2 miles roundtrip.

And if you don’t want to walk, you can also drive to the top to catch the view. This view of the Valley is worth checking out and is a well kept secret - there is rarely anyone else around.

The latest rage that is sweeping the country is about to hit Arizona - “Hands Free” Cell Phone legislation. What this means is that you would be required to have a speakerphone installed in your car or to use a headset in order to talk on the phone while driving. Emergency personnel and commercial truck drivers conducting legitimate business would be exempt.

In terms of laws that interfere with personal liberties, this one is pretty close to the top of my list of laws that make me angry. First of all, I am not convinced that scrambling around to find your headset in order to answer a call while driving is less dangerous than just picking up the phone and putting it to your ear. Second, it’s just as distracting to eat or smoke while driving as it is to use one hand to talk on your cell phone. Finally, I spend a lot of time in DC for work where a “Hands Free” law has been in place for about a year now. The DC city council is notorious for coming up with new revenue generating schemes, so I’ve always assumed that was the intent of the “Hands Free” law there. But I have yet to see a study showing a significant decrease in the number of accidents or road rage incidents as a result of such laws. I know I’m experiencing just as much road rage myself, because unfortunately “Hands Free” laws don’t eliminate stupid drivers!

Hopefully the Arizona legislature will have more common sense than other states and strike down this ridiculous piece of legislation.

According to the annual survey done by Men’s Fitness Magazine, Phoenix ranks as the 15th fittest city in the country. Baltimore was ranked the #1 fittest city (huh???) and Tucson ranked 4th. Strangely enough, Mesa was ranked the 10th fattest city in the country. According to the magazine, an increase in alcohol consumption was the leading factor in Mesa’s ranking…which is odd given that Mesa is historically known to have a large Mormon population. Who knows. The whole survey seems a little fishy to me in a number of ways.

Anyways, in reading this article it got me thinking about the upcoming Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in Phoenix. The marathon takes place a week from today on Sunday, January 15. I personally can’t run a mile without my knees feeling like they’re going to explode, so I have tremendous respect for anyone who can not only run a marathon, but who also can go through the training it takes to prepare to run a marathon (although I do think you have to be just a little bit crazy!). But even if you aren’t a runner, there is more entertainment at this event than just sitting on the side of the road watching runners go by. There are live bands along the route. This year’s performers will include Collective Soul and a couple dozen local bands. The marathon starts in downtown Phoenix. The course weaves through Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe. And the finish line is in Tempe.

If you aren’t interested in the marathon, at least consider yourself warned that there will be traffic detours next weekend, in addition to all of the light rail construction detours that already exist.

All of this talk of fitness is making me feel lazy that I’m sitting on my couch typing on the computer - time to hit the gym!
