It’s quite nice to get away from the city once in a while, but there’s nothing to do in Gallup. At least it’s during the holiday season so I can’t really complain.

Just as my former high school gets graded a Highly Performing school (only a few in the entire country have this honor), some idiot kid had to put the school in a bad light. Seems a 14-year-old freshman at Barry Goldwater High School followed an elderly woman (who’s grand-daughter is also a student) to her home. He asked her if he could use her phone, and started sexually assaulting her. He ended up raping the poor woman, and as result has gained lots of media coverage here in the Valley. The kid’s behind bars for now, but I don’t know what punishment he’ll get from this.

I’m nearly speechless. BGHS had been known for years as the “ghetto school” and as inferior to others; even when I went there from 2000-04. To have this happen puts them in an even more negative light.

If there’s anyone reading who doesn’t actually know what 5 & Diner is, it’s basically a 1950’s-themed restaurant. There are a few locations in the Phoenix area, so this explanation is for non-Phoenicians who may be reading.

Anyway, 5 & Diner is the only place I’ve seen that serves the egg cream, which is a beverage made up of milk, chocolate syrup and seltzer water. I’d been wanting one for weeks, and I had never had one before. Last night, I finally got to see why the drink is so popular in Brooklyn. It tastes great! I usually don’t like gimmick restaurants, but if it means going to 5 & Diner once a month just to get an egg cream, I’m all for it.

A handful of World Wrestling Entertainment superstars, along with a few Total Nonstop Action wrestlers, and even a few wrestlers not currently active gathered here in Phoenix for one day only, to honor their friend, the recently-departed Eddie Guerrero, in a closed funeral service.

The guest list read like an all-star lineup:

From WWE: Chris Benoit, John Layfield, Rey Mysterio, Dean Malenko, Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, Linda McMahon, John Laurinaitis, Lita, Edge, Jamie Noble, Shane Helms, Doug Basham, Torrie Wilson, Kevin Dunn, Bruce Prichard, Michael Haynes, and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

TNA was represented by Jackie Gayda, Konnan, Gail Kim, Mike Tenay and Christian.

Inactive stars who showed up included Chris Jericho, Charlie Haas, Mark Jindrak, C.M. Punk, Billy Kidman, Billy Anderson, Tim Prichard, Tommy Drake and Sting.

The eulogy was delivered by WWE Legend “Superstar” Billy Graham, and speakers included the aformentioned Malenko, Jericho, Benoit, Layfield and Vince, as well as Eddie’s brothers Chavo Sr., Mando and Hector, as well as Eddie’s nephew Chavo Guerrero Jr.

In the meantime, fans and friends of Eddie can send email to WWE that will be compiled into a book and delivered to Eddie’s wife Vickie. Eddie had just recently moved to Phoenix from El Paso, and he enjoyed life in the Valley of the Sun. Now I am very positive he will enjoy life in the Great Reward.

Resto in paz y viva la raza, Eduardo.

Happened today, November 13, 2005. I’ve been going to the NASCAR Nextel Cup events at Phoenix International Raceway since… I’ll say around 2000 or so. I’ve always had a great time, cheering on my favorite drivers and hoping they do good. However, I realized that it’s just not fun anymore. It was blistering hot outside, I didn’t get any sleep the night before, and the seating on the bleachers is very cramped. About the only upside to everything was that my guy Elliott Sadler got a career-best 11th place finish at PIR. He’s won races before, but has never been good here. I was very glad he got 11th. However, watching 43 cars in hot weather going in circles is more fun on TV than it is live. I jsut realized that today after my awful experience.

Long story short: Unless I’m in a luxury suite, I will never go to PIR again as long as I live. It’s just not worth walking miles from the parking lot to the track in 96 degree weather.

And on an unrelated note: World Wrestling Entertainment star Eddie Guerrero was found dead in his hotel room in Minneapolis. He was only 38, and was a legend of professional wrestling. My thoughts go out to Eddie’s family and close friends/fellow wrestlers Chris Benoit and Rey Mysterio.
