Notification in my mail today

I got an important Sex Offender Notification letter in my mail today. Apparently there is a sex offender that just moved in our neighborhood. Yikes! Before we had a child, I would have just tossed it out with the rest of the junk mail, but this has me concerned for our child’s safety. I checked out this website http://www.mapsexoffenders.com/ and was shocked to see so many out there amongst us.

I’m not sure how I feel about the sex-offender notifications. Granted I’m white and male so I’m pretty safe when it comes to predators of that nature – but do these things cause more hysteria than necessary? At my old job the office ladies would spend hours searching sex offenders on their computer terminals when they shoulda been doing other things.

We life in a fear-based society, so I’m sure that these things have their places and I’m all for letting people know that they should keep an eye out, but what cost? If they’re dangerous enough to notify neighbors, should they really be out of prison? On the other hand, if a person has been released from prison the implication is they have done their time and paid their legal debt to society, so why continue to label them as such? We make laws that limit where a sex-offender can live, where they can work and where they can or cannot go for entertainment. Pretty soon we are going to have legislated sex-offender ghettos and all that is going to do is cause people to go into hiding – and people who are in hiding tend to already be acting shady and my go on to offend again because they have nothing to lose.

Wow that was a lot for me just then, but as a student of sociology this type of topic really intrigues me. :)
