Pride in the desert . . .

pride.jpgLast night, about 6:30pm, the doorbell unexpectedly rang. I opened the door and found an envelope leaning on the wall. I hadn’t ordered anything, so what the …? A view of the return address with the words, “Intercollegiate Athletics” gave a pump of adrenaline and the explanation. The season tickets are here, the season tickets are here! I’m pretty sure they came by regular US mail last year, so don’t know what’s up with the evening UPS delivery – it does add dramatic impact. Enclosed also was the usual map for traffic flow and parking (I take the bus, no surprise) and some coupons and the game day guide which I’ve scanned for purposes of this post.

Nothing is more fun than an ASU home game. From the opening video on the Jumbotron to the solid gold student section to Sparky doing the scored points pushups – it’s a great way to spend a few hours. If you’re really lucky, sandwiched in between all the hoopla is a pretty good football game. I haven’t read any pre-season hype or ratings for the Devils and hope the team hasn’t either. Just go out and play a good game, that’s all I ask.

My son is my companion and co-football fanatic. We go to ASU games on Saturday and then Sunday we find a bar with TV that is showing the Bengals. He wears a Carson Palmer jersey, his wife wears TJ Houshmandzadeh and I wear Boomer Esiason. He’s in the Army, stationed at Ft. Huachuca, so we’ve been able to do the football thing with relative ease. He just got a new job that will have him on-call during weekends, so hope game allowances can be made. Fall + football = fun. See you at the game.

Should be a great year for ASU … Don’t wanna get too far ahead of myself lest I jinx the Devils.

Just broke down and looked at the polls – we are safely out of the top 25, but received a vote in all of them and actually #26 in the coaches’ poll. When you start too high, there’s no place to go but down. Better to enter the season underrated, especially by the other teams.
