A pelican … briefly

pelican.jpgLook what a co-worker found in her backyard when she went home the other night. She called animal rescue and they said the pelican was probably trying to go from the Sea of Cortez to California and got blown off course by monsoon winds.

My friend was getting ready to let her two dogs out into the yard and, fortunately, spied the pelican before the dogs did. Poor thing was traumatized enough with his/her unexpected trip to the desert – the dogs could have been too much to bear.

I have always said that you absolutely never know what you’ll see while living in Arizona – even a pelican, if only briefly.

I saw a pelican flying over Litchfield Road many years ago. When I told my co-workers about it, they wouldn’t believe me and had a few laughs at my expense.

They apologized the next morning after seeing the news reports that evening of a pelican being flown back to California.

I’m glad your friend not only had the presence of mind to not let the dogs out, but to snap a photo and share it!
