Take a Hike – Arizona

Question: What do you do if you are a hiker or an outdoor enthusiast in the Phoenix area? I mean, apart from the monthly pilgrimage to Camelback, South Mountain, Superstitions and the annual one to the Grand Canyon?

Answer: You join the Take a Hike – Arizona Yahoo mailing list / club and put your outdoor activities on the power track.

Take a Hike AZ is a big group of about 444 people, most of them in the Phoenix area. It is not just an online discussion group for hiking topics. The mailing list is used to announce and organize activities. The group calls itself a club, but it is not a “club” in the conventional sense of the word.

Take a Hike AZ is rather a loose bunch of people who lead active lives and love the outdoors, participating in a wide variety of outdoor activities. Group members mail the group about activities they plan on doing, along with the date, time and location. Other members who are interested in the activity just sign up and/or show up to have a lot of fun together.

The best thing about the group is that the activities are not just limited to hiking alone. There are a wide variety of activities including hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, skiing, canoeing, sailing, barbecues, movie nights, parties, day trips, weekend trips… you name it! Take a look at a sample list of actual activities undertaken by the group in the recent past or being planned for the near future:

1. Hikes in Arizona and neighboring states.
2. “Water hikes”, where part of the hike involves wading/swimming.
3. Mesa Golfland Sunsplash waterslides.
4. Havasupai camping.
5. Parties for different occasions – personal events, national holidays, etc.
6. Trip to High Sierra Music Festival in CA.
7. Trips and camping trips to CA, NM, UT, Mexico and other farther states and countries.
8. Visits to Beer Festivals.
9. Sailing in San Diego.
10. A big annual rim-to-rim hike of the Grand Canyon in September.

So, what are you waiting for? Take A Hike AZ is a really fun and active group. No matter what your outdoor / adventure interests are, you are sure to find friends and fellow-enthusiasts in the group. Go on to the group’s mailing list home page or just send an email to takeahikeaz-subscribe@yahoogroups.com to sign up and have fun.

Happy Trails.
