Bookmans: I’m a winner

Following up on Kangamini’s post about Changing Hands, I spent a good hour or so at Bookmans in Phoenix today. More times than not, I end up in a book or record shop on my days off. Lucky for me, Bookmans has ’em both.

I didn’t come up with any books; I really need to read the ones I have before I buy more. But I did pluck three records today: Roxy Music’s first LP; 10cc The Original Soundtrack; and Pearl Bailey More Songs for Adults Only (to be used as art).

So I go to check out, and when the clerk is about to ring up my total, he tells me, “You’re a winner.”

Instantly, I have grand visions of being the millionth customer or something: horns blaring, balloons and confetti falling, Bookman’s throwing money at me. OK, so I got ahead of myself. My reward was not having to pay for my goods (about $15 worth of records). Still a pretty sweet deal. (Think I better buy a lottery ticket tonight.)

Apparently, for no reason whatsoever other than to reward customers, Bookmans registers randomly select two winners per day who don’t have to pay for their goods. Wish I woulda known: I’d have gone back for more.
