Forget the Chinese Cultural Center, go to Chandler

Well, it isn’t the entire city, but Chandler has the most asian restaurants that I have come across.

When I moved here, I would go to Lee Lee Supermarket for groceries, have dim sum or authentic chinese cuisine at China King and go to Saigon for Vietnamese food. There wasn’t many asians back then. I remember we’d be shocked and a little relieved to see “our people.” That was almost two years ago. A lot has changed now. I’ve noticed an insurgence of asians, possibly from Los Angeles, coming to Phoenix. Everytime I go to Lee Lee during the weekends, it is now uncomfortably crowded with people that don’t mind invading your personal space during the checkout lines. It brings me back to my childhood in Chinatown, Los Angeles. Good old times.

In the plaza of the of Lee Lee Supermarket on Dobson and Warner, Sam Woo BBQ Restaurant, was slated to open there. But for some mysterious reason, they withdrew. Such a shame, that place would have been packed to the gills with hungry customers like myself. I remember dining there during my teenage years in the city of Alhambra, California. Roast duck wonton noodles, ginger Hainam chicken with rice, yum… Thankfully, across the street, a new Vietnamese sandwich shop franchise, Lees Sandwiches, which originated in San Jose, opened up recently. It’s no Sam Woo, but any asian restaurants from California are always welcome.
