Ribbon overload

They’re everywhere BUT tied around the old oak tree these days. Actually, they seem to mainly be slapped on the back of SUVs. (But maybe that’s just because I drive a tiny little car, and it’s hard to see anything but the back ends of SUVs.)

Anyway the magnetic yellow ribbons are all sort of blurring together. There’s Support Our Troops, God Bless America, Bring Our Troops Home, Pray for Our Troops, etc. (I can’t help it, whenever I see “Pray for Our Troops”, I think “but what about the other side? shouldn’t we pray for them too if we’re gonna pray?”.) And I’ll admit it, I have a magnetic ribbon too. But mine’s on the refrigerator, and says “Support Individuality”. I got it because it made me laugh. And I do “support individuality” — enough so that I’m not slapping that on my car.

I like bumper stickers better, because there’s more room for expression. Also, it seems like stickers are slightly more committed than magnets. (Although I always worry about the people that have bumper stickers with tiny print — I imagine them being constantly tail-gated as people try to read them.) The other day I saw one that said “My president can beat up your president.” Written in French, which cracked me up.

So, do you have a magnetic ribbon on your car? Why or why not? And did you know you can get custom made ones? Some of the recently made ones on a site like that read “EMPTY GESTURE” and “STOP MAGNET ABUSE”, but many were more personalized variations of the Support Our Troops theme.

My husband suggested “Support the Constitution” as an answer to all the Support Our Troops ones. I’m all for that one.

While we’re on the topic of things that are overexposed…can we also talk about those annoying rubber bracelets? I like the “Support Individuality” ribbon – that’s awesome.

Recently I was approached in the Walgreen’s parking lot by two people selling yellow magnetic ribbons. (I have no idea why they were peddling their wares in the parking lot.) When I politely refused, they yelled at me that I was unpatriotic and unsupportive. Now that’s the spirit! How sad.

Good grief. You should have told them that the patriotic thing to do would be to GIVE them away :P

i have to say, i haven’t seen that many yellow ones as of late. The ones i notice are all for random causes (hence, i remember them), like autism and breast cancer
