Fiesta Bowl Block Party – help me Phoenix!!!
Everyone I talk to says that I should go, at least once, to see it. But when asked, they admit that they will never go back. That once was enough for them. Some reminisce about the old days but say it has become way too crowded. I like spectacle, should I go? Is this something you gotta do, if only once? What do you do for New Year’s Eve?

I fall in that “been once, will never do it again” category. I wouldn’t necessarily put the block party on the “top 100 things you must do” in Phoenix, but I also wouldn’t put it on the “avoid it at all costs” list either. It’s just super crowded, super drunk and super loud. If you’re in a mental state to deal with that, then go. If not, avoid it! I’ll personally be hanging out in my backyard with a few friends and hopefully will be able to build a fire in my firepit, assuming the the burn ban is lifted…
last year we had a friend in from l.a. and planned on going to it but ended up instead in our backyard with some beers, a bottle of captain and a fire in the firepit. the $20 cover charge seemed excessive initially, but then again, we were down there early to eat dinner and weren’t impressed with the swarms of grandparents in sweatshirts and turtlenecks and gaggles of kids running around. we checked it out and i’m sure it got fun (and crazy) about 2 hours after we left. but we still had a great time in the backyard with the firepit.
I’ll keep it simple for you… if you’re not a party person, don’t go. I tried it one year… it’s really not a bad place to go, but you really have to be into it. I’m just not a big, noisy crowd kind of person. It’s like the State Fair… without the farm animals.
On the plus side, though, I got to hear some local bands I’d never heard of before and find I now dig their music.
Come up to Flagstaff for the pinecone drop, it’s cheesy, silly, and a whole lot of fun.
If you like spectacle and crowds, sure you should go. Kinda like going to Times Square, I imagine. Only warmer and without the neon.
