Comfort Food

I am delighted that my bedroom is capable to turning into a cave of cold… because on days when you’re sick, there’s nothing like a mediocre air conditioner to make things that much worse.

I don’t get sick very often, and when I do, it’s not usually of the ohgodnofoodplease variety. This one is. But my craving for greasy comfort food is paying no heed to this fact… Sick-Adam wants unhealthy deep fried delights. This time, it’s fried okra. Don’t ask me why.

When I was a kid, I didn’t really like it. I’d eat pickled okra all the time, but fried okra tended to be too slimy for my taste. At some point something clicked in my head, though, and I started getting cravings for it. Though Church’s Chicken will come through in a pinch, there are a few restaurants in the valley that serve up great soul food.

Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Cafe is rumored to be one of the best, but somehow I haven’t made it there yet. Practically next door to my house, though, is Lil Mama’s Soul Food Restaurant. It’s kind of a hole in the wall but the people are friendly, the food is fantastic, and they’re happy to whip up some take-out if you call in advance.

I found this article detailing a few others I haven’t tried yet.
