This Old House

I loves me some monsoon season, but the gusty winds at night are definitely responsible for a big increase in Scary House Sounds™. It’s bad enough as it is… most of my home was built in 1928 and has hardwood floors. If that’s not a recipe for ghostly nighttime noises, I don’t know what is. But the wind just makes it worse.

The trees wave and brush across the roof- that sounds like someone groaning. (Note to self, get those trimmed.) The aluminum foil I taped around one of the windows in the bathroom sucks in air during a pressure change, sounding like someone scraping chains across the tile floor. (Note to self, check the weather stripping.) The ghost of Monsoons Past moans a ghoulish warning to me in my sleep. (Note to self, refill lithium prescription.)

It’s worth it for the joy of waking up and seeing an overcast sky outside my window. Even if it’s actually 110°F out there, for a few brief moments I can pretend it’s going to be seventy-something.
