poker? damn near killed her!

Oh, that joke never gets old.

This has been a LONG LONG LONG week. But with the start of the monsoons and a couple of days of rain, I’m feeling a lot more upbeat. (Wow, Phoenicians really do talk about the weather a lot.) Despite the sickening trendiness of poker evident last Christmas when every store (including Circle K) had a poker tournament gift set for sale, a small set of my coworkers have been playing semi-regular poker games for a couple of years now. It’s a good excuse to hang out indoors and relax with the added incentive of getting to redistribute a bit of this year’s raise.

We rotate the location of the game through the few of us who live somewhere central in the valley. One of the guys bought a house at 39th Drive and Camelback Road earlier this year… it’s a beautifully kept and upgraded 50s block construction number, but pretty much anyone will agree that the area is a touch on the sketchy side. Tonight’s his turn to host.

The first time I drove out there for a party, I accidentally turned at 39th Avenue instead of 39th Drive. I looped around a few times and got an interesting neighborhood tour before realizing my mistake. Of course I didn’t get attacked or anything, and I only got worried once when I accidentally turned into a dead end and the people hanging out on the street all seemed to be ambling toward me like hungry zombies.

On the bright side, I won’t have to drive very far at the end of the night to trade in my poker winnings for some smack!
